When applying the Columns function, first select your text and then press the “Columns” button under Page Layout tab.

By default tables have preferred width, which means Word 2007 decides the sizes. But if you want to set fixed width then click with your right mouse button on the table and choose Table Properties. A window will open. In the bottom right corner click on the “Option” button. Uncheck “automaticly resize to fit content”. Now you can define width and height in the properties and it will stay like that.
