Statement of Comprehensive Income Template – what is a comprehensive income?

Statement of Comprehensive Income Template is an example prepared under IFRS. You may have seen the statement before and it even may be required by your local GAAP, but I guess you are wondering what it is in the first place.

While the financial statements include besides balance sheet and statement of changes in owner’s equity an income statement, there’s something not disclosed in the income statement, but still in the owner’s equity statement and in the balance sheet. So this gap is filled with the comprehensive income statement.

In a nutshell a comprehensive income is a change in equity during a period from transactions from non-owners. These changes do not include any changes resulting from investments by owners and distributions to owners. Payments into share capital and share premium for an example are excluded from the statement alongside with any distributions to owners (like dividends). What this statement includes, are items that bypass the income statement. These are unrealized items, like foreign currency translation gains and losses, available for sale assets gains and losses (also added to our Statement of Comprehensive Income Template) etc.

The statement is necessary to give a more comprehensive view of the organization as a whole hence are these material items disclosed in the financial statements and since they are not included in the income statement, they are disclosed in the Statement of Comprehensive Income.

The lines included into our Statement of Comprehensive Income Template are “Gains on revaluation of land and buildings”, “Available-for-sale financial assets”, “Cash flow hedges” and “Currency translation differences”. Depending on your industry, company specifics or local GAAP requirements you may need to change the name of the lines or remove / add additional lines for the template to fit your needs.
