Ethics in doing business

I am fairly certain it goes without saying, but as it is, there are a few ideas I would like to toss out there regarding ethics. Running a business, day-to-day activities etc. are bound to make you forget those few simple rules that you really should not forget when it comes to business ethics.

  • Keep your word and promises. Sounds easy, but how often have you neglected to do so? It also relates to meeting all relevant deadlines, both with your business partners (clients, suppliers) and also authorities. Note that also disobeying or inability to follow the regulations is a form of bad conduct.
  • Be polite in all means of communication – both on phone, in your e-mails and so on. You are the business card of your business so when people communicate with you or to you, they see the style you use as the style the company uses to communicate with other parties.
  • Treat your business partners with same care as you’d like yourself to be treated. Be thoughtful and caring about events in people’s lives, i.e. birthdays.

When you think about it, most of it comes down to your own personal code of conduct. How do you generally behave in your personal life is how you behave in your professional life – both your actions and thoughts are reflected. Think about it.
