To resize the columns, simply drag the little markings on the ruler. Remember that the columns are always equal.

How to change the formatting of the slide to its default settings? | Powerpoint 2007
First make sure you have selected the appropriate slide from the Slides menu on the left. Go under Home tab into Slides section and click on “Reset”. It turns the position, size and formatting of the placeholders into their default settings.
